Turns out, it’s not just the celebrity connection that makes this Jaguar E-type Roadster really quite special.
This 1961 Sherwood Green drop-down E-type was shipped to Silverstone Auctions’ Silverstone Classic Live Live online auction on July 31 and August 1 from the collection of actor and comedian Steve Coogan, and with an estimated presale estimate of £ 300-350,000, is clearly a special example.
The car you see here is chassis number 62.
It is one of the first 92 right-hand drive E-types with exterior hood locks, and one of 56 used as dealer demonstrators, plus this was the first in Scotland.
It was there in July 61, to the brand’s dealership in Edinburgh, but the dealers were not allowed to sell them until September, and eight days after that month, their first owner was registered.
The number one owner lived in North Berwick and he eventually sold it in 1978 to his next custodian, this time in Edinburgh.
Number 62 moved to Fife with its third guardian, before returning to Edinburgh, and in later years, television presenter Quentin Willson helped Coogan acquire it.
It’s a car of matching numbers, retains its flat floor, hood grilles, split throttle linkage, and all the other details that characterize it as a very early E-type.
